Cape Cod Flat's Edible Delights

Cape Cod's flats are a rich ecosystem, offering more than just moon snails and rogue oysters for the responsible forager. Here are a few other edibles you might encounter:

1. Beach Plums: These small, tart plums grow wild on shrubs along the coast.  Ripe in late summer and early fall, they are perfect for jams, jellies, or even a pie with a bit of added sugar.  Just be sure to identify them correctly, as some wild plums can have a pit that's not safe to consume.

2. Samphire (Sea Asparagus): This succulent plant thrives in salt marshes and along the edges of the flats.  Look for fleshy, green shoots with a slightly salty flavor.  Samphire can be enjoyed raw in salads, pickled, or steamed as a side dish.  Caution:  Be absolutely certain you've identified samphire correctly, as some similar-looking plants can be toxic.

3. Rockweed: This seaweed is a common sight on Cape Cod's shores.  While not for everyone's palate, rockweed can be used in small quantities to add a salty, umami flavor to soups, stews, or broths.

4. Quahogs:  These littleneck clams can sometimes be found in the flats, although they are more abundant in designated clamming areas.  Always check local regulations and size requirements before harvesting.  Quahogs can be steamed, baked, or used in chowders.

5. Sea Lavender:  Not technically edible, this beautiful purple flower that grows on the edges of the flats can add a lovely floral aroma to baked goods or sachets.

Remember, responsible foraging is key.  Here are some additional tips:

  • Never harvest more than you plan to consume.

  • Only collect what you can confidently identify. There are many poisonous look-alikes to edible plants, so if you're unsure, leave it alone.

  • Respect the ecosystem. Take only what you need and leave the rest for others to enjoy.

  • Be aware of local regulations.  Some areas may have restrictions on foraging.

With a little knowledge and respect for the environment, you can enjoy the delicious and unique bounty that Cape Cod's flats have to offer!
